A Well-Traveled Banner

Cindy Abbott climbed Mt. Everest for Rare Disease Day 2010 and in 2013 she competed in the 1,000-mile Iditarod, carrying the same banner.

Cindy Abbott climbed Mt. Everest for Rare Disease Day 2010 carrying this banner, which NORD had provided. Cindy has Wegener's granulomatosis and promotes awareness on behalf of NORD and the Vasculitis Foundation, which is one of our members.

This year, she competed in the 1,000-mile Iditarod, carrying the same banner. While injuries kept her from completing the course, she did log 630 miles through the Alaskan wilderness. When she knew that the race was over for her, she marked her own personal finish line with the Rare Disease Day banner. Cindy's knee and her dogs' feet are also visible in the photo.

Cindy is doing fine now. NORD appreciates her efforts on behalf of all people with rare diseases. And we wonder where the Rare Disease Day banner will go next year!
