The Tourette Syndrome Association, Inc. (TSA) is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of individuals affected by Tourette syndrome and their families. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a hereditary neurologic movement disorder characterized by repetitive motor and vocal tics. Symptoms may include involuntary movement of the extremities, shoulders, and face accompanied by uncontrollable sounds and/or inappropriate words. Symptoms tend to be variable and follow a chronic waxing and waning course. TSA's mission is to identify the cause, find a cure, and control the effects of Tourette syndrome. To this end, TSA facilitates a research grant award program and is guided by both a volunteer national medical advisory board and a scientific advisory board. The association produces a variety of educational materials including brochures, a quarterly newsletter, and videotapes. In addition, TSA maintains a crisis hotline, provides physician referral listings, and engages in patient advocacy.
