The Wide Smiles (WS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support, networking, and information for families and individuals dealing with issues of cleft lip and palate. Incomplete closure of the roof of the mouth (cleft palate) and/or the presence of an abnormal groove in the upper lip (cleft lip) are considered among the most common facial birth defects. Approximately one child in 700 is born with a cleft. Wide Smiles offers networking services to affected family members; provides referrals to physicians and clinics that specialize in clefting; has a cleft lip and cleft palate research registry; offers a variety of educational materials on all aspects of clefting; provides supportive materials; and has a regular magazine entitled "Wide Smiles Quarterly."
