The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, Inc., is an international, non-profit, self-help organization whose mission is to uplift and inspire anyone affected by burns through peer support, collaboration, education and advocacy. The society's major goal is to ease the psychosocial adjustment of severely burned individuals during and after hospitalization so they may resume full and productive lives within their communities. This is achieved through a series of support programs including peer counseling, family group meetings, and re-entry programs. The Phoenix Society works mainly through volunteer area coordinators who are burn survivors themselves or parents of burned children. They provide peer support and counseling to affected individuals and their families under the guidance and approval of medical professionals. Established in 1977 and consisting of 350 chapters, the society provides services that include a newsletter, Burn Support News, SOAR Peer Support Program, annual World Burn Congress, toll free information and referral line.
