The FOLKS: Friends of Landau Kleffner Syndrome is a voluntary organization in the United Kingdom (UK) that was established in 1989 by parents of children with Landau Kleffner syndrome (LKS). The organization, which currently consists of approximately 100 members, is dedicated to providing information, support, and resources to families of children with LKS and related disorders. In addition, FOLKS is committed to advancing the education of the medical profession and the general public concerning LKS and its implications for affected families as well as promoting research into the disorder, publishing the results of such studies, and supporting organizations that conduct such research in the UK. Landau Kleffner syndrome is a rare disorder that becomes apparent at an average of five years of age. Children with the disorder experience regression of language skills, loss of speech, and, in some cases, behavioral problems including poor attention and irritability.
