The MAME, Inc. Mothers Against Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a voluntary organization, provides information to patients, family members, healthcare professionals, and the general public about myalgic encephalomyelitis, a disorder affecting the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems and the muscles. Although its exact cause is not known, it is thought to be caused by a viral infection in association with an immune system abnormality. In addition to serving an educational function, Mothers Against Myalgic Encephalomyelitis has advocacy and fund-raising activities. Although it serves the nation as a whole, its membership is currently focused in Massachusetts and Texas.
