The Hemochromatosis Information Center is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for hemochromatosis. Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a metabolic disorder characterized by increased absorption of dietary iron. Without appropriate treatment, excessive iron may accumulate in the liver, heart, pancreas, and other organs, causing organ dysfunction and tissue damage. Established in 1971, the foundation is committed to fostering understanding of the disease by supporting activities that encourage research; advising legislative and regulatory bodies at the local and federal levels; increasing general awareness of hemochromatosis to help ensure early diagnosis and prompt treatment; and improving the quality of life for affected individuals and family members. The foundation also establishes local chapters; sponsors discussion groups where people share their experiences; and provides physician referrals, general information, and local contacts. Educational materials produced by the foundation include a brochure series.
