The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRFI) is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to supporting and funding research into the cause, treatment, prevention, and cure of diabetes, a chronic metabolic disorder that affects the body's ability to properly manufacture or utilize insulin, a hormone necessary for the body to transport food glucose into cells for energy. Juvenile Diabetes, also known as Insulin-Dependent Diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus Type I, most commonly becomes apparent in affected individuals between the ages of 10 to 16 years. Founded in 1970, the Foundation also provides information, assistance, and support to affected individuals; promotes public awareness; provides referrals; and offers a variety of educational materials including brochures and fact sheets.
