Dr. John Marquis Converse founded the Institute in 1957 at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital with support provided by the Society for the Facially Disfigured (currently named the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction). It moved to New York University Medical Center in 1963 because of the need for an academic medical center.
