The Alkaptonuria Society is an organization in the United Kingdom dedicated to providing information about alkaptonuria, a rare disease in which the body does not have enough of an enzyme called homogentisic acid oxidase, resulting in the buildup of homogentisic acid (HGA) in the body. Some HGA is eliminated in urine, but the rest is deposited in body tissues and is toxic. Although the disease is genetic, symptoms typically do not appear until around age 40. Often, the first symptom is back pain, followed by pain and stiffness in hips, knees and shoulders. The society's goal is to create an information and support network for those affected, providing up-to-date news about research and treatments.
