{"id":107284,"date":"2023-02-07T10:00:28","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T15:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/?p=107284"},"modified":"2023-02-03T15:24:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-03T20:24:38","slug":"state-report-card-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/es\/state-report-card-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"NORD\u2019s State Report Card Shows Progress for Rare Disease Patients, Highlights Remaining Barriers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><i>Patient access to care and services improved across key policy areas in 2022, but challenges remain for the rare disease community<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>February 7, 2023<\/b><b>, Washington, D.C.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD\u00ae) today published the latest edition of its annual State Report Card, which for the past eight years has rated all 50 states and the District of Columbia on important issues affecting the more than 25 million Americans living with a rare disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s State Report Card was compiled using data through November 2022 and provides a detailed analysis of each state\u2019s performance on nine major policy areas of importance to the rare disease community such as newborn screening, Medicaid eligibility, and prescription drug out-of-pocket cost protections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNORD\u2019s State Report Card is an important tool for highlighting progress and identifying remaining barriers for rare disease patients from coast to coast,\u201d said <\/span><b>Heidi Ross, NORD\u2019s Vice President of Policy and Regulatory Affairs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis easy-to-use resource shows how effectively states are serving individuals and families living with rare diseases, highlights advances being made across the country, and identifies where we still need to work together and focus our attention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key takeaways from the new report include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the continued importance of telehealth for rare disease patients and important gains in access during the COVID-19 pandemic, <\/span><b>14 states received a failing grade because they have not joined the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can improve telehealth access to out-of-state physicians.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In 2022, four states passed step therapy laws, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which will allow more rare disease patients to gain timely access to the prescription medication recommended by their health care provider. In addition, <\/span><b>several states passed prescription drug related copay legislation, leading to reduced out-of-pocket costs for patients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Twelve states expanded Medicaid eligibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, giving more children and low-income rare disease patients access to necessary medical care.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of <\/span><b>24 states have<\/b> <b>now<\/b> <b>signed legislation into law creating a Rare Disease Advisory Council<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including four states in 2022 alone.
