The House moved first, passing the government funding bill on a 316-113 vote. The Senate followed with a\u00a065-33 vote. The bill moves to President Obama&#8217;s desk where it is expected to be signed into law.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The House and Senate are expected to vote Friday to pass an <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/meetings\/RU\/RU00\/20151216\/104298\/HMTG-114-RU00-20151216-SD002.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">omnibus spending bill<\/a> that would fund the government through September 2016. Included are several important developments for the rare disease community:<\/p>\n<p>First, the NIH sees a $2 billion boost (7% increase) in funding and the FDA has\u00a0an additional $132 million (5% increase), including a $2.5 million increase to the orphan products grants program, which is fantastic news all around. \u00a0Second, the rare pediatric disease PRV program was extended through September. \u00a0It had been set to expire in March.<\/p>\n<p>These increase opportunities for research and innovation in areas where we so desperately need new treatments to help patients, and for those to then be reviewed for safety and efficacy in a timely manner.<\/p>\n<p>These are policy wins that NORD has worked hard for on behalf of the community in our advocacy and policy work.\u00a0 Visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/advocate\/policy-priorities\/policy-statements\/\">Policy Statements page<\/a> to read up on our activity in these, and other, legislative areas.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/2015-12-17-omnibus.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23109 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/2015-12-17-omnibus.jpg\" alt=\"omnibus legislation 2015\" width=\"603\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATE (12\/18\/2015 12:20 p.m.): \u00a0The House and Senate voted Friday to pass the\u00a0omnibus spending bill\u00a0that funds the government through September 2016.
