Washington, DC,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>September\u00a0<\/span><\/b>16<\/span><\/b>,<\/span><\/b>\u00a02020<\/span><\/b>\u2013The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD<\/span>\u00ae<\/span>) has announced\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>second annual\u00a0<\/span>Rare Cancer Day,\u00a0<\/span>taking place\u00a0<\/span>September 30, 2020<\/span>. Spearheaded by the NORD Rare Cancer Coalition®<\/sup>, which is comp<\/span>osed<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>27<\/span>\u00a0rare cancer-specific\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>ember\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>rganizations, Rare Cancer Day\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0observed\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>bring attention to<\/span>\u00a0the challenges patients and caregivers face<\/span>, raise awareness of the need for greater research funding<\/span>, early diagnosis<\/span>\u00a0and patient support,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>unify individuals living with rare cancers<\/span>.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>his year,\u00a0<\/span>NORD and the Rare Cancer Coalition®<\/sup> are h<\/span>ighlight<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>value<\/span>\u00a0of genomic testing in helping patients find targeted therapies<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>G<\/span>enomic testing<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>diagnostic test which checks tumor<\/span>\u00a0tissue and blood<\/span>\u00a0for<\/span>\u00a0targetable<\/span>\u00a0biomarkers<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>opening the door to\u00a0<\/span>the possibility of\u00a0<\/span>effective, personalized treatment options and\u00a0<\/span>helping patients to potentially avoid large scale, damaging chemotherapy<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leading up to Rare Cancer Day<\/span>, information<\/span>\u00a0on genomic testing<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>rare cancer\u00a0<\/span>patient stories<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0videos\u00a0<\/span>and more\u00a0<\/span>will be shared.\u00a0<\/span>On\u00a0<\/span>September<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>30<\/span>, NORD will ask the world to commemorate\u00a0<\/span>the day<\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>using the #RareCancerDay hashtag,\u00a0<\/span>posting messages of support for the community and sharing\/retweeting facts about rare cancers\u00a0<\/span>and genomic testing\u00a0<\/span>in order to\u00a0<\/span>spread awareness<\/span>\u00a0and foster education<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0A\u00a0<\/span>free\u00a0<\/span>webinar entitled\u00a0<\/span>\u201cJust\u00a0<\/span>For<\/span>\u00a0You: Genomic Testing and Personalized Care for Rare Cancers,\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0featuring two experts and a rare cancer patient, will\u00a0<\/span>take place<\/span> at 2:00pm EDT.<\/span><\/p>\n
