As part of its expanded outreach to medical professionals, NORD recently partnered with Frontline Medical Communications<\/span>\u00a0(FMC)<\/span>, a division of Medscape, on\u00a0<\/span>Rare Diseases Report: Rheumatology<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Rare Diseases Report: Cancers<\/span><\/i><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>both published in late<\/span>\u00a02020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The t<\/span>wo<\/span>\u00a0special issues<\/span>\u00a0are\u00a0<\/span>the latest in\u00a0<\/span>a series of publications\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>n which NORD and FMC collaborate to promote awareness of rare diseases<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0current research and\u00a0<\/span>state-of-the-art\u00a0<\/span>treatments among physicians and other medical professionals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe value this opportunity to\u00a0<\/span>communicate<\/span>\u00a0directly to the professionals who play such an important role in the lives of the patients and families whom we represent,\u201d Rebecca Aune,\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>irector of Education Programs<\/span>\u00a0at NORD<\/span>, noted in her introduction to\u00a0<\/span>Rare Diseases Report: Rheumatology.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u201cTo be able to convert today\u2019s rapidly expanding knowledge to earlier diagnosis and state-of-the-art care for patients requires constant communication with those on the \u2018front lines\u2019 \u2013 the medical professionals caring for patients affected by rare medical conditions.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In their introduction to\u00a0<\/span>Rare Diseases Report: Cancers,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Jim Palma, Executive Director of Rare Cancer Foundation, and John Hopper, President of the Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation, <\/span>provide an update on the activities of the NORD Rare Cancer Coalition®<\/sup>, which they co-chair, and describe how it promotes\u00a0<\/span>awareness of rare cancers and support<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0organizations serving patients and their families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is for each member of the Coalition to provide the best possible service to its particular rare cancer community,\u201d Palma and Hopper write.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both publications feature articles about\u00a0<\/span>recent\u00a0<\/span>NORD research to document the impact of COVID-19 on the rare disease community.\u00a0<\/span>For these articles,\u00a0<\/span>the editors interviewed rare disease medical experts in oncology and rheumatology on how\u00a0<\/span>research and patient care in their disciplines have been affected by the pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>Rare Diseases Report: Rheumatology,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Sivia<\/span>\u00a0Lapidus<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0MD,\u00a0<\/span>of the Joseph M.\u00a0<\/span>Sanzari<\/span>\u00a0Children\u2019s Hospital and Hac<\/span>kensack Meridian School of Medicine in New Jersey,\u00a0<\/span>and Fatma\u00a0<\/span>Dedeoglu<\/span>\u00a0MD,\u00a0<\/span>of Boston Children\u2019s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, talk about the effect of COVID-19 on patient care, including related topics such as telemedicine. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly, in\u00a0<\/span>Rare Diseases Report: Cancers,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Allison F. O\u2019Neill<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0MD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, and\u00a0<\/span>Razelle<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Kurzrock<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0MD, of University of California at San Diego and\u00a0<\/span>Moores<\/span>\u00a0Cancer Center, discuss the impact on clinical trials and<\/span>\u00a0the challenges to ongoing clinical care for those affected by rare malignancies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>These publications and\u00a0<\/span>a similar\u00a0<\/span>one\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0rare neurological diseases to be published around Rare Disease Day are part of a<\/span>n expanding\u00a0<\/span>array of\u00a0<\/span>educational\u00a0<\/span>resources<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>NORD provides for medical professionals,\u201d Aune said. \u201cThese\u00a0<\/span>include CME<\/span>\u00a0programs,\u00a0<\/span>conferences<\/span>, webinars<\/span>\u00a0and a\u00a0<\/span>video library, among others. The\u00a0<\/span>ultimate goal<\/span>\u00a0is to help patients get the earliest possible diagnosis and the best possible medical care.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The two publications have been broadly distributed to medical professionals in rheumatology and oncology. They are also available for download on the <\/span>NORD website<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
