NORD in the News: Financial Times Highlights NORD’s Training and Advice for Family Foundations

Categorized in -

FinancialtimesA recent article in the Financial Times (June 24, 2016) looked at the growing impact families have on medical research.  According to the Center of Strategic Philanthropy at the Milken Institute, family foundations provide approximately 3 percent of all medical research funding in the U.S.  Families also help bridge gaps in the understanding of diseases, such as with natural history studies, and they also raise awareness of diseases.

The article examined how it is not always easy to become engaged in medical research, as “families need to get up to speed on complex science and the latest research. Then there is setting up the foundation where, in addition to the normal incorporation processes, they need to make sure their board of advisers has the right skills and knowledge.”

The article highlighted NORD for its work as a nonprofit to help families take these steps, offering “training, mentoring and advice on everything from establishing a fundraising strategy and building a website to creating a scientific advisory board.”
