About Fundacin Alfa-1 de Puerto Rico
The Alpha-1 Foundation of Puerto Rico is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to individuals and families affected by alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency through programs of education, advocacy, and support of research. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a rare hereditary metabolic disease characterized by low levels of the enzyme alpha-1 antitrypsin and progressive degenerative and destructive changes in the lungs. The organization’s main goal is to increase awareness of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency among the general public and healthcare professionals. Established in 1997, the organization also encourages early detection and treatment of this disorder. It produces educational materials, including translations of brochures published by the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Association.
