About Obesity Medicine Association
The American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) is a national, non-profit professional association of physicians who treat people with problems related to overweight and obesity. The Society has a membership of 1,500 throughout the United States and several foreign countries. Established in 1950, the Society has encouraged public awareness of weight related issues and overall health. The Society has helped further the goals of Bariatric Medicine through continuing postgraduate medical education, the exchange of obesity information, and research on the prevention, cause, course, effects, and treatment of obesity. In addition, the Society seeks to advance and improve the standards of practice and quality of professional service in the field of bariatric medicine; improve educational opportunities for the training of bariatricians; increase awareness of bariatric medicine; and maintain a Board of Bariatric Medicine. The American Society of Bariatric Physicians produces educational materials including pamphlets, brochures, booklets, journal article reprints, and a newsletter.
