We’re thrilled to announce a new partnership that will help raise awareness of rare diseases and connect The Mighty‘s wide-reaching readership with NORD resources. As part of the partnership, NORD, the leading independent 501(c)(3) advocacy organization dedicated to helping people with rare diseases, now has a growing home page on The Mighty and will appear on many stories on the site.
The Mighty is a story-based health community focused on improving the lives of people facing disease, disorder, mental illness and disability. More than half of Americans are facing serious health conditions or medical issues, and one in 10 Americans has or will develop a rare disease.
While there are 7,000 different rare diseases, people often face similar challenges: a long road to diagnosis that takes many years and can include several misdiagnoses; lack of treatment options (nearly 95 percent of rare diseases still have no treatment); limited research or knowledge of their disease; and many rare diseases are chronic and lifelong or life-altering.
“There are 30 million Americans with rare diseases, more than half of whom are children. We look forward to working with The Mighty to connect people and families with others who are experiencing similar challenges, to remind them they are not alone, and to share NORD’s valuable educational and advocacy resources,” said Mary Dunkle, Vice President for Educational Initiatives at NORD. “With this partnership, we will be able to help even more people.”
We encourage you to submit a story to The Mighty and make your voice heard (you can include “NORD” in your email subject line when you email your story). Visit the rare diseases page on The Mighty’s website to read others’ stories.
