Guillain-Barre & Associated Inflammatory Neuropathies

The Guillain-Barre Syndrome Support Group of the United Kingdom is a national voluntary health organization dedicated to providing information, support, and resources to affected individuals, family members, and friends. Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare, rapidly progressive disorder that affects nerves outside the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nervous system). GBS frequently follows an upper respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. The syndrome is characterized by nerve inflammation (polyneuritis) and associated with weakness, tingling and numbness that may rapidly progress to paralysis. Such symptoms initially affect the feet and spread to the trunk, arms, and face. The syndrome often resolves in a few weeks or months, but some residual symptoms may persist for longer periods. Although the exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome is unknown, it is thought to result from an abnormal autoimmune response following infection. The Guillain-Barre Syndrome Support Group of the United Kingdom was founded in 1985 and currently consists of approximately 2,000 members. The group is committed to educating affected individuals, healthcare professionals, and the public about Guillain-Barre syndrome. In addition, the group provides educational materials including a regular newsletter entitled “Reaching Out” and several guides such as “GBS: Quick Guide,””The GBS Patient in Intensive Care,” and “Other Neuropathies.”
