About National Multiple Sclerosis Society
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) is a voluntary, non-profit, health organization dedicated to ending the devastating effects of MS by advancing the cure, prevention and treatment of multiple sclerosis and by improving the lives of affected individuals. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disorder of the central nervous system that causes the destruction of the insulation (myelin sheath) surrounding the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord as well as the nerve fibers themselves. Established in 1946, the National MS Society funds research which offers services for people with MS and provides professional education programs. Through its home office and 50-state network of chapters, the society serves more than a million people each year. The National MS Society also produces a wide variety of educational materials including a quarterly magazine, brochures, pamphlets, and video aids.
