About Aplastic Anemia & Myelodysplasia Association of Canada
The Aplastic Anemia & Myelodysplasia Association of Canada (AAMAC) is a federally incorporated and registered national charity. Our primary goal is to provide a support network for Canadian patients, family members, friends and healthcare providers involved with the following bone marrow failure diseases: aplastic anemia, myelodysplasia (MDS) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemogobinuria (PNH}. We offer telephone and e-mail peer-to-peer support, educational material, a free quarterly newsletter, local support group meetings, conferences/seminars, and medical research grants. We also help to promote the Canadian Blood Services programs and the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow network by encouraging blood donations and donor registration. Aplastic anemia involves failure of bone marrow to produce all blood cells, while MDS involves failure to produce mature blood cells. PNH eads to the production of defective red blood cells which hemolyze (break down) , potentially leading to severe anemia, organ damage and/or stroke.
