American Association of Suicidology

The American Association of Suicidology (AAS) is a non-profit, voluntary organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide. Founded in 1967, AAS promotes research, public awareness programs, and education and training for professionals and volunteers. In addition, it serves as a national clearinghouse for information on suicide. Membership of AAS includes mental health professionals, researchers, suicide prevention and crisis intervention centers, school districts, crisis center volunteers, survivors of suicide, and a variety of lay persons who have an interest in suicide prevention. A primary objective of AAS is to help suicide prevention and crisis intervention centers throughout the United States and Canada provide quality services. AAS develops public service announcements regarding suicide prevention and sponsors yearly conferences and training for clinicians as well as those who have lost someone to suicide. Educational materials produced by the organization include “Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior,” a quarterly journal entitled “Newslink,” a quarterly newsletter, and a number of suicide prevention pamphlets.
